We have kind of a soft spot for the folks at Camden. When their CEO, Ric Campo, led the keynote at last year’s Brainstorming Sessions, he surprised his own team—and the rest of our audience—by taking the stage in a Maintenance Tech’s uniform. It’s no surprise that the organization has made FORTUNE’s 100 Best Places to Work list for the third year in a row (this year at #10). This is one corporate team that knows about performance … and—as you’re about to hear—in more ways than one.
At the company’s annual Management Conference in Houston last week, Ric got a little surprise of his own when he was called to the stage along company’s president Keith Oden, and COO Malcolm Stewart during a dance set being played by the company’s in-house band, The Birds (gotta love a company that has an in-house band!). As the Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling” began to play, more than 400 members of the Camden team took to the dance floor and broke into a synchronized dance.

“At first I was baffled, then amazed and then humbled,” said Stewart. “To think that these busy, talented Camden managers made time to learn, practice and execute this dance is incredible.”
In preparation, employees had to rehearse for several months in 79 cities nationwide; and the routine—which required coordination of several different sections starting at different times—came off without a hitch, even though the group had never practiced as a whole before the performance!

Linda Willey, Director of Property Services, got the idea from an Oprah show and coordinated the national logistics. “We feel fortunate to work for such an incredible company and wanted to surprise Ric, Keith and Malcolm to show our appreciation. I saw the dance tribute to Oprah and when we began to tell people what we wanted to do, whether they were from our construction group, finance department or community management, the excitement began to spread and everyone was thrilled to be involved in the surprise.”
“It gave me goose bumps,” said Campo. “Of course, if they could do this without us knowing you have to wonder what else is going on we don’t know about,” smiled Oden. “I’m not sure how we can top this moment as a company. But knowing this team and our culture, we’ll find a way.”
